  • Boesmans: Pinocchio performed by Stéphane Degout, Vincent Le Texier, Chloé Briot…
Grand Théâtre de Provence, Aix-en-Provence

The Klangforum Wien, conducted by Emilio Pomarico, performs Pinocchio by Philippe Boesmans and stage director Joël Pommerat, with Stéphane Degout, Vincent Le Texier, Chloé Briot… Performance recorded on 9 July 2017 at the Grand Théâtre de Provence in Aix-en-Provence.

A puppet that wanted to become a real boy, with a nose that grows and who is gradually with the reality of a world without pity...ring a bell? Joël Pommerat's Pinocchio draws upon a number of key elements from Carlo Collodi's original newspaper serial, published in 1881. A wonderful story, epic and childlike, dealing also with seemingly political subjects, as explained by Joël Pommerat in an interview with musicologist Aurélie Barbuscia.

"Pinocchio is a utopia aspiring to become reality. His story describes the conflict between fiction and reality, lies and truth, artificiality and authenticity. It tells the evolution of evolving from a thing to a human; it is thus a story about humanity."

The puppet comes into the world believing he is its center, a conviction that eventually leads to a multitude of problems, but one that will also allow him to learn about life. This is why Pinocchio is considered a coming-of-age story, a tale of initiation.

Joël Pommerat is no stranger to children's tales. Aside from Pinocchio, he also produced in 2004 a production of The Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella in 2011. His collaboration with the composer Philippe Boesmans began in 2014, when both men joined creative forces for the production of Au Monde at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Bruxelles.

In Pinocchio, Philippe Boesmans calls upon a chamber orchestra of 19 musicians; as for the different character roles, these are divided amongst six singers. The role of Pinocchio was composed for a young travesti soprano, Chloé Briot in this particular production.
