Royal Chapel of the Palace of Versailles

Regal reverberations of organ and voice

This special winter concert at the Royal Chapel of the Palace of Versailles features a mix of late Renaissance and early Baroque composers who were famous for their keyboard composition and performance. Throughout the concert, we hear each of Couperin’s three Leçons de Ténèbres pour le Mercredi Saint. These works use the Latin text of the Old Testament Book of Lamentations, which tell the story of Jeremiah’s despair after seeing the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians. In between each of the three Leçons de Ténèbres are two works both entitled Elévations by Couperin and Lebegue. The concert closes with Miserere Mei Deus, by Louis-Nicolas Clérambault - a hypnotic polyphonic piece for organ, lute and voice. Take yourself back to the early 1700s and enjoy this beautiful mix of songs in a majestic setting.
