Music for quiet reflection

At the Église des Billettes in Paris, a special concert showcases François Couperin’s famous 3 Leçons de ténèbres pour le Mercredi Saint. Before Couperin’s masterpieces, we hear The Human Voice by Marin Marais. Featuring the uncommon sound of a bass viol, this work is a wonderful example of basso continuo form. After this, the first of François Couperin’s Leçon de Ténèbres is heard, followed by an improvised organ prelude. The second Leçon de Ténèbres is then played before another improvised prelude for organ and viol. The concert closes with the third and final Leçon de Ténèbres which ends with the image of Jeremiah weeping on his knees.

Couperin’s renowned work is performed by soprano Maïlys de Villoutreys and organist Ronan Khalil. The concert also features mezzo-soprano Anaïs Bertrand and the ensemble Desmarest. Immerse yourself in the beautiful voices recounting a tragic story of the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians.
