Salle des concerts, Philharmonie 2, Paris

A mammoth work for solo piano

Begun in 1819 and completed four years later in 1823, the Diabelli Variations cycle was the last work Beethoven completed for the piano. The monumental size of this cycle was never originally intended. When the publisher Anton Diabelli proposed to several composers to create variations on the waltz he had written, Beethoven first refused this idea. He later found himself scribbling some variations and slowly more and more emerged from beneath his quill until an hour’s worth of variations was written. The volume initially scared Diabelli, who thought it would face criticism, but he was convinced by Beethoven that this was be a theme and variations work worthy of Bach or Mozart and the work was duly published.

Composed in 2011, the 33 Variations on 33 Variations by Hans Zender display a constant zooming effect into the original work. Hear the versatility of Jean-François Heisser as he tackles this titanous work.
