Flutes to the fore

Out the way, cellos! Clear the way, Pianists! It’s the flute’s turn to take centre stage at this concert by the Paris Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Scottish musician Douglas Boyd. Much of this concert is about flautist Emmanuel Pahud, who is determined to prove the flute to be worthy of centre stage as the more common solo instruments.

The first work in this concert is a Concerto in C Major by Ignace-Joseph Pleyel. As a piano builder himself, Pleyel proves that it is not just the instruments he can build. Second, we hear Francis Poulenc’s Sonata FP 164. This melody springs between a enchanting and playful theme. The concert closes with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Serenade No. 10 in B flat Major "Grand Partita”. Another woodwind-featuring work, this music demands excellent coordination of each wind section of the orchestra.
