Gioachino Rossini: Tancredi Conducted By Ottavio Dantone
Cour des Hospices, Beaune

In Notre Dame Basilica in Beaune, the Accademia Bizantina and the Namur Chamber Choir perform the melodramatic opera with great subtlety.

This grand opera by Rossini is staged between Venice and Milan and focuses on Enlightenment philosopher Voltaire for the inspiration of Tancredi. This was a long time in the making. Having twice stopped working and abandoning the project (first in February 1813 and then December 1813), he overcame great tribulations to finish what he had started so many times before.

This version differs from the abandoned versions by the tragic fate of its central character. In this performance Tancred succumbs to his injuries and dies. Accompanied by strings, this romantic ending is inspired by the eponymous Voltairian tragedy. The Accademia Bizantina play the  opera on period instruments. Two enthralling acts make this opera a fine tale of love, tragedy and power.
