Angela Gheorghiu is one of the most watched singers of her generation, requested as well for her vocal qualities as for her acting talents on stage.
After she took classes at the Bucarest School of Music, Angela Gheorghiu studied with Mia Barbu at the Conservatoire of Bucarest. Her international career was launched in 1994 when she debuted in La Traviata on the stage of the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. The conductor said that during the rehearsals, he had to leave the room: "My eyes were filled with tears. This young woman is wonderful. She can do everything". Since then, opera houses and venues around the world regularly invite Angela Gheorghiu: from New York to Kuala Lumpur, from Paris to Tokyo, from Chicago to Seoul, from Sao Paulo to Athens.
Her wide range gives her the opportunity to shine in a vast repertoire: Violetta, Mimi, Manon, Cio-Cio San, Tosca, Marguerite, Juliette or Adriana, her interpretations on stage or on record all met great success. Her albums were acclaimed by the critics and received many rewards: Gramophone, Diapason d’Or, Choc du Monde de la Musique in France, prize Cecilia in Belgium, prize Deutsche Schallplattenkritik in Germany, Echo prize, Italian prize Musica e dischi for the foreign lyrical productions, the prize of the critic in the United States and so on. Among her numerous distinctions, she was appointed Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres and Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by French Ministry of Culture.
Angela Gheorghiu gives a great deal of concerts, whereas she sings as a soloist or in the company of other singers, like at the "Prom at the Palace" for the jubilee of Queen Elisabeth II or at the occasion of the concert in Petra commemorating Luciano Pavarotti in 2008.
