French musician and orchestra conductor, Fayçal Karoui is presently the musical director of the Orchestre Lamoureux and of the Orchestra de Pau Pays de Béarn. He is among that generation of young French conductors requested in France and abroad by the greatest orchestras.
Fayçal Karoui did his musical education in Paris and won the first prize in orchestra conducting at the Paris Conservatoire. After that, he was admitted in the upgrading class. Quickly brought to conducting thanks to his job as a conductor assistant besides Michel Plasson at the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, he discovered and tamed a wide lyrical repertoire.
Invited to conduct the Orchestre de Paris, the Orchestre de l’Opéra National de Paris, the Orchestre National de France, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Orchestra Giuseppe Verdi in Milan, the Orchestra Accademia Santa Cecilia in Rome or the Orchestre de Chambre in Lausanne, he stood by many soloists, including Nicholas Angelich, Paul Meyer, Alexandre Tharaud, Bertrand Chamayou, Frank Braley, Xavier Phillips, Alexander Ghindin, Daishin Kashimoto, Nelson Freire, Gauthier Capuçon, and lyrical artists like Nora Gubisch and Patricia Petibon.
Appointed at the musical direction of the famous Orchestre Lamoureux in 2011 – replacing Yutaka Sado – Fayçal Karoui decided to give back to this orchestra the identity it had during its glorious past. Therefore, he set a specific program revolving around pieces of the French repertoire and re-established the tradition of the orders to French composers.
Fayçal Karoui is the dedicatee to pieces of Guillaume Connesson, Karol Beffa, Nicolas Bacri and Thierry Escaich, among others.
Since 2002, he also has been working as the musical director for the Orchestre de Pau du Pays de Béarn where he established an eclectic program in which the new music systematically stands alongside the repertoire’s cornerstones.
