Jean-Christophe Spinosi

French Conductor and Violinist (b.1964, Corsica)

A violinist by training, Jean-Christophe Spinosi is a conductor who specialises in Baroque music. He is the founder and musical director of the Ensemble Matheus.

Jean-Christophe Spinosi studied violin from a very young age before taking up conducting. He is passionate about both chamber music and ensemble music and founded the Matheus Quartet in 1991. A few years later, this group became Ensemble Matheus, and moved to be based at Le Quartz in Brest.

The Ensemble Matheus has a very diverse repertoire, but is most well known for its performances of baroque music. Throughout the 2000s, Christophe Spinosi conducted a series of recordings of Vivaldi's works, which was acclaimed by critics. In 2005, his version of the Orlando Furioso was recognized with a Victoire de la musique classique.

Jean-Christophe Spinosi works with dynamic, internationally recognized artists such as Cecilia Bartoli, Marie-Nicole Lemieux, Natalie Dessay and Philippe Jaroussky. He has performed in many prestigious venues in France, including the Théâtre du Châtelet, the Paris Opera, the Théâtre des Champs- Elysées and the Palace of Versailles. He has also played at many major venues in European cities including Munich, Prague and Baden-Baden, collaborating with orchestras such as the Wiener Staatsoper, the Mozarteum Orchestra, Salzburg and the Rundfunk Sinfonie Orchester Berlin.
