Philippe Jordan

Swiss orchestra conductor (born 1974, Zurich)

As the son of the late conductor Armin Jordan, who died in 2006, Philippe Jordan naturally gravitated towards music, taking up the piano, violin and singing. After training at the Zurich conservatory, he began performing as a pianist and in chamber ensembles, and worked on conducting (under Jeffrey Tate). He began his career in Germany as a Kapellmeister in Ulm, then as Daniel Barenboim's assistant at the Deutscher Staatsoper de Berlin, before becoming principal conductor of the Opéra de Graz in 2001. He rapidly forged a name for himself at the most prestigious opera venues, notably the Glyndebourne Opera Festival, the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Salzburg Festival.

As guest conductor, Philippe Jordan has conducted the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Vienna Philharmonic and the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, as well as the renowned North American orchestras from Seattle, Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Washington, Montreal, New York and San Francisco.

Philippe Jordan is noted for his perceptive and refined readings of the opera repertoire (from Mozart and Saint-Saëns to Wagner and Richard Strauss). He was appointed musical director of the Opéra de Paris in 2009 and has led the Vienna Symphony Orchestra since 2014.
